QOW #3- January 21, 2008

Bon jour!

Week three already...the year is flying!!!! I wish all of you luck this midterm week...I know you'll all do a great job.

Anywho... I am feeling a bit inspired by The Metamorphosis so let's look at that. This is a two part question...

1. Is Gregor a bug or not? How crazy would that be? Tell me what you think.

2. Speaking of insects...choose a character from any novel we've read thus far and tell me what bug they would be and why.

Crazy is as crazy does. Enjoy!

1) Well I have a feeling that Gregor is not a true bug except I think I like to believe he is one. He most likely just felt as if he was a small insect being ignored and neglected in life as bugs typically are. He may have felt as if he was more of a nusiance to his family instead of an addition so he related himself to a big roach.

2) If another character in literature was a bug, I think Alice in Wonderland would be a fly. She ventures into wonderland travelling from person to person as would a fly. However, everyone she visited found her to be annoying and wanted to shoo her away.

NOOO he is not a bug! it is an allusion to a bug-like life. Miserable! He feels like the tiniest speck on earth because his family depends on him but besides that doesnt care for him at all! i feel bad for Gregor because he slowly wastes away unappreciated. poor gregor =(

Onto another bug... Bertha would be a misquito. Misquiotoes never leave you alone. You can try to use bug spray but it hardly ever works. Then once they get to you, they leave a nice itchy red bump on your skin to remind you that they were there. Viola, Bertha is pretty much the same. She is insane and Rochester attempts to get rid of her by locking her up. But then when he and Jane tried to get married, poof she appears again because she is still married to him. She is a nuisance to him. He cannot get rid of her until she burns down Thornfield killing herself, and leaving Rochester without an eye and a hand [like the nice little bump that the misquito leave; except missing an eye and hand are a little more extreme].

I'm not last for once. :0)

Alrighty, here we go:
1) Gregor is not a bug because although this is a piece of fiction, it is nonsensical that he would turn into giant ugly stinky bug. If the plot was literal and he indeed turned into a real live bug, it would make a very boring book, especially because his family was mean. I think that when I assumed that it was a metaphore, it made the book slightly more interesting.

2) Jane would be a lady bug beacause I like them. Plus, all that time in her childhood when people were pushing her around (i.e. squishing her), bad luck followed. When she went off on her own and ran away from Rochester, she had good luck. I mean what are the odds that she would inherit a billion gagillion more than she ever had aaand Mr. Rochester would catch on fire/be blind and thus give Jane the feeling that she was no longer dependant on him. She wears the pants in life.

i dont think gregor is a bug.... he is just a psychooo...it is impossible for him to be a bug, he is just an insane, gross human who does not use persobnal hygiene

I think Piggy from "The Lord of teh Flies" would be a pig because he is fat and looks like a pig. Also, Many of the boys treat him as a pig in the story.

Ooooooooh! He's not really a bug?! That makes the whole thing so much easier. Wow, now that I think about it, that makes sense. I now agree with what everyone else has said about Gregor only feeling like he's being treated like a bug by people. I feel like an idiot now, I didn't even think about the whole thin g being a metaphor...thanks for enlightening me!
As for another character being a bug, Grendel would be a tarantula because they are hairy, scary, and carnivores. People who live in places where they are common avoid them as much as possible and dread their presence.

first off, gregor isnt a bug. but he is deeeefff off his rocker for thinking he is one. b/c i did not understand this book for one second while i was reading it, i sought the literary genius that is liz turner for a little clarification. she told me that he feels like a bug because his family doesnt really care about him and stuff like that.

i think Mr. Rochester (before he gets blind/crippled) would be a milliped or whatev because hes a creeeeeep....trying to marry like 293842398473 people at once.

Again...from Suzy Q...

1.) As previously mentioned, I think that Gregor is not a bug in actuality, this is simply how he perceives himself. However, i'm having difficulty grasping why the author specifically had him become a beetle, why not a spider? However, his insignificance is shown through his time as a bug.
2.) I think that Pearl from "The Scarlett Letter" should be a firefly. This is becuase she is bright, little, and they flutter about all the time. They are also rather creepy, which Pearl is.

Few comments for the gallery...

1. You are not "stupid" for thinking Gregor is a bug. Simply look further into the meaning behind it. Is it literal or metaphorical?...either way, what did Kakfa mean universally by this transformation and the effects it had on people.

2. Someone explain to Chrissy that a pig is not an insect. I would appraoch her myself, but I'm a little scared...oink-oink!!

3. I love how some of you totally get into these questions. Rock on!

You would think I'd be better with the typos....

oops
i guess i cant read questions

on that note I believe that Edna would be the Queens bee because she is independent and would like to be the lead of a group.

I believe Gregor is not a bug and he is just feeling distant from his family right now. He probably feels like nobody respects him like they should especially when he brings home a lot of money for his family.

Jane would be a caterpillar/butterfly because at the beginning of the book she is not noticed very much and treated badly. However, at the end of the book men fall in love with her as she has grown and matured much like a caterpillar does when becoming a butterfly.

I don't think that Gregor was really a bug. I think that the author is just comparing him to a bug because they have similar feelings... or at least how you would assume a bug would feel.

If another character from a novel was a bug, I think Estella from Great Expectations would be a beautiful butterfly (I think that's a bug :-P) because everyone always said how gorgeous and elegant she was and many people view butterflies the same way.

1] Gregor isn't a bug, but he feels like a bug because his family treats him like he's an ugly creature and a waste of space.

2] If another character in literature was a bug, i think Bill Chalmer would be an ant or a dying ant. He's a hard worker, like the ant usually is, but then all of a sudden he begins to die mentally which starts killing him physically.

1. well i dont think gregor is really a bug either. i agree with the fact that although the book is fiction, im pretty sure it wasnt meant to be some crazy sci-fi who knows what bugs life tale. it seems like gregor is just supposed to be a man who went insane and now is like a little annoying insect that infests the house.

2. i'd say that rose of sharon would be a spider, because her and her creepy little grin scare me just about as much as a spider with all its freakish legs.

I'm going to have to agree with everyone else and say that Gregor was not literally a bug because that's impossible. He was simply compared to a bug because he felt as insignificant and unappreciated as bugs often are.

Also, I think Orlick would be a spider because he seemed to enjoy trapping victims and making them his prey as a way to raise himself in the world.

Your all trying to think too deep on this one, have some imagination....Gregor was definitely a bug. The whole purpose of the metamorphosis was to make Kafka's buddies laugh with its nonsense. While it is not realistic for a person to morph into a bug, there are no confounds to fiction writing. In a story a very unrealisitc thing can be actually happening.

2 Jane Eyre would be a mosquito, because i hate her...and boy do i hate mosquitos

by the way Chrissy was clearly referring to the Pig-snouted larvae of the Hyphydrus ovatus beetles of Western Europe

Max has a point but i still think that he isn't really a bug. Simple explanation why would you feed a bug when you could just step on it and kill it. Then there wouldn't be any other problems as scaring the guests or anything like that b/c bugs are everywhere.

Hester Prynne as a bug would be a cricket. This would because they are not the most beatuful creatures but they make beautiful music. Hester is not the prettiest and she has done some things in the past(obvioulsy if she has the scarlet letter) but she is a good hardworking person just like everyone else in the town. Also crickets come out at night which is when Hester seems to be happy that Mr. Arthur Dimmsedale comes to reveal himself as the father.

I like Max's point as well, but when reading this book I didn't feel as though Gregor morphed into a true bug. I felt as though the feeling of incompetence and depression overtook him to actually making him believe he was a bug. Bugs are a small thing on the scale of the earth and it is just what Gregor's family had made him feel like.

Secondly, Edna in the awakening would have to be a caterpillar turned butterfly. The caterpillar represents her sheltered life until she awakens and breaks through as a beauttifulll butterfly. =)

1] alright, it's nice to be metaphorical and all but gregor was definitely a bug. sure, there was a deeper meaning, but i think that what kafka was trying to convey was that Gregor's family relied on him too much and could actually get along fine without him. if he wasn't a bug, why would the boarders be afraid of him? why would he stay in his room and be avoided by all, except the maid? if he only felt like a bug you'd think that he'd at least still make it to work, even with feeling small and all.

2] i think Edna Pontellier would be a butterfly. This is because, through her awakening, she morphs into something other than what she originally was. Also, with her newfound wings, she is able to fly away.

okay...he's not really a bug (or is he?). The deterioratrion of his mind due to societal pressures crushes him...he reverts back to primal instincts even if he tries to reason...if he thinks he's a bug he can't go forth and continue to be pressured by those surrounding him...who by the way only want him when he is fully functioning so they don't have to do anything...at first they are worried for monetary reasons but when the shoe changes and they have to take care of him, they can't be bothered and are even disgusted by the fact that they have to...if he really had turned into a physical bug, they could have just Raided him to death...bug bomb, anyone?
