Hello Wee Bees!

I have to say I really enjoyed reading your responses to our first ever post. Some were detailed; some were funny; all showed an understanding of the novels and I have to say for a bunch of people who really didn't like Great Expectations, you had some pretty deep discussions about it. If you haven't answered the first post yet, I highly suggest you do. This is your first and last notice that they MUST be answered by the end of school on any given Friday. Gives me some good reading for my long, boring weekends away from y'all!

Anywho, you'll be proud to know that I have decided to move into the age of really new technology and purchased myself a Droid X this weekend....so much power....so many megapixels.....so many apps to discover. As I salivated over the seemingly endless choice of apps out there ( do I go with Pandora or the one that let's me organize my shopping list? Hey! Leave me alone! Do you have any idea what a three year will do if you forget her favorite snack? It's not pretty.), I began to wonder what other people would pick and if it was a true reflection of their personality. This led me to think of what my phone would say about me if anyone ever found it, which led to the prompt for this week.

Choose any character in a novel you've read thus far this year and tell me what apps you'd find on their phone. The apps can be real or imagined, but explain what the app is and why this character would have it. For example, if I found Forrest Gump's phone he'd probably have an app for shrimp recipes and the best chocolate shops in the states....wait, do they have a chocolate app?

 I gotta go....

So my absolutely favorite character Holden Caulfield would have quite the application list on his phone. First and foremost he would have a lie detector to find the utmost phonies and liars. He would also have his pandora list set to depressing songs and slow tuned beats. A Girl Interrupted would be in the movie section and "Its Kind of a Funny Story" would be read on his kindle app. He would have games such as the shooting duck game and hangman. He would also have a gps to always find a way home and ebay mobile to find a new record for his sister and a new hunting hat. I also see him constantly updating his twitter account with things such as "searchin for them phonies" and "lol people suck"

The character I would pick is Susie from "The Lovely Bones". She would have a lot of apps on her phone. She was very curious so they would range from different types of flowers to photography tips. She would deffinately have a camera app on her phone as well because she loved taking pictures. She would probably like a google Earth app too. It would be similar to the way she sees the world from heaven. I can see her with the book "The Lovely Bones" because she was intrigued with her own murder. She would also have a mystery application that she could solve the cases. Susie loves writing so she would probably have an app for that. In her heaven there were a lot of dogs because she loved them. There would probably be a dog breed app. Lastly her choice of music would be pop songs or any other song with an upbeat tempo. She was an interesting character and would probably have many more apps than just those.

Though many people might not know my character it would be Eona from the book Eon. She is a head hard girl who is into martial arts. So she would have an app. for that. Also she would have a horoscope app. because of her interest in the zodiac animals. Another app on her phone would be an online shopping app. So that she could purchase weapons.

My favorite character is Ronnie from The Last Song. She is the type of care free person that has a soft side for animals, so I believe the apps on her phone would be an app for crazy things to do before you die, or maybe an app all about sea animals. I also believe that she would have a photo album app on her phone to keep pictures of her dad, so she can look at them whenever she wants since he really meant a lot to her. Also, another app she might have is a police scanner, because she seems to run into the police a little to then most teenagers.

The character I would choose is Lenny from "Of Mice and Men." One app he would have on his phone would probably be a little kid app of pictures of animals or funny pictures to look at because he was slow so his thought process was of a child's. He might also have a teaching app of the alphabet to learn how to read or a math app of simple addition and subtraction because that is what young children would be learning. Finally he might have one of those virtual pet apps that would keep him entertained because he could not handle owning a real pet since he killed a mouse, a puppy, and a human.

My favorite character is by far Frodo Baggins from "Lord of the Rings".. well, it's actually Pippin, but it'll be easier to stick to Frodo. He'd have an alarm clock app to remind him of breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper, and all the other meals he eats throughout the day as a fat hobbit. He'd have a gps to find his away through Mordor. He'd have one of those game apps that use the motion of the phone/ ipod to determine if youre bowling or whatever. In this case it's be a sword fighting app, that helps him train to fight Orcs and Nazgul. He'd definatly have The Ring or maybe the Eye of Sauron as his background, to just stare at and be drawn into... (:

Edna from "The Awakening" is one of my least favorite characters. But I thought that it would be more fun to make a list of apps that she would use.

-A painting app that would allow her to paint people's portraits.
-She would then use the facebook app to post her portraits and tag her friends in them.

-Or she can just use a camera instead since that's so much easier.
Also, I feel that if Edna had a facebook she would be one of those stalkerish people and just creep on Robert's profile all day to make sure he's behaving in Mexico.

-She would have a cookbook app so she can cook her meals when she's home alone- oh wait I forgot, she has personal chefs to do that...
-So instead she would have the urbanspoon app to help her find restaurants in her area.

-Edna would also use the pandora app so Mademoiselle Reisz would not have to play the piano for her.

-She would use her text messenging app to text her bff Adele Ratignolle and plan beach dates.

-She could also use the ESPN app to check the rankings for the latest horse races.

-A weather app would also be helpful to let her know if the tide is up or down at the beach in case she's ever planning to drown herself in the ocean.

-She should also use a real estate app to help her find a house that isn't the size of a birdcage

-Finally, if Edna had an iPhone she should use FaceTime to talk to her children, since she is their mother and all and never chooses to have contact with them, but I'm sure the bon bons make up for everything.

One of my favorite characters from a novel is probably Logan Thibault from The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks. I actually don't see him as the kind of guy who would have a fancy phone with apps and stuff because he's a pretty simple guy. However, if he was to have one he would most likely have an app for "How to tell the one you love that you basically stalked them" since he basically creeped on this girl Elizabeth for years and years and then finally he decided to travel by foot from Colorado to North Carolina to go find her. He wouldn't have any of those pointless apps because he's too smart to care about silly games. He might have the "Amazon" app because he reads a lot of books and it would help to have the amazon app because they can ship it to wherever he is at the time. At the same time he'd have a "Ebay" app to sell all of the books that he's already read.

oh and i forgot to say the one about Logan was from alex delorenzo

The character I will be using is Edward from "How I Paid for Collge: a novel of sex, theft, friendship, and musical theatre" by Marc Acito. Edward's application list would be very diverse. He is obsessed with musicals and all things Broadway, so he would deffinatly have the BroadwayWorld app, which includes Broadway news and a Broadway radio station. He would have a camera app to take incriminating photos of college football players to use as blackmail. He would have the TKTS app, to get all his favorite theatre tickets at cheap prices due to his lack of funds. The "Scholarship" app would be heavily worn but to no avail. He would also have a SportsNews app so he could have things to talk to Doug about.

In the novel series LA Candy the main character Jane is a girly girl who is into celebrity gossip and news. On her phone she would most likely have apps such as "celebrity match up" (its a real app on the droid system). What this app does is it allows people to take a picture of someone and it searches for both male and female ceclebrities. Also she would have other apps that would give her helpful make up and hair tips and tricks. She would also have pandora to listen to music. Another app she would have would be someting to do with TMZ this way she could keep up with all the celebrity news.

The character I picked was Ronnie from The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks. She would have an app that tells her everything she needs to know about animals because she cares about all things. Plus, she would have an app with piano music and another app where she can create her own pieces. Also, half of her play lists would consist of classical music and the other half would have punk rock music. Her photos would have picture of her and her boyfriend, her brother, and her father. She would also have an app about what cancer is and how to treat it so she could help her father when was sick.

If Al Joad from the Grapes of Wrath had a phone, he’d probably have the following apps:

Some kind of social networking app, like Facebook, to creep on random girls and plan meet-ups.
Apps about cars like iGasUp so that he can find the cheapest/closest place to buy gas, Carticipate so that he can find people to carpool with, or any other app about cars and mechanics since he loves them.

The novel I have chosen is Dear John. One character who would love a droid is Mr. Tyree. He is an older man who is autistic. He keeps to himself, so I feel like he would love a droid with many apps. This way he does not have to interact with anybody. I think his favorite app would be a coin app. He is big on the coin collecting, so to have an app dealing with coin collecting would be great for him. This app would consist of stating the values of certain coins, pictures of collector's items, and where to get the most valued coins. Having an app like this, would be like having a best friend for him.

I really want to see Easy A tomorrow when it comes out so I feel like I should write about Hester Prynne. Poor girl, lonely and alone, and she only has her phone. I would assume she would need to have a lot of time consuming games because she only has her babygirl to keep her company, which is nice, only to a point. For her little girl, she would need a lot of tips because she's naive and has nobody to ask questions. Hester would also need a tipline on speed dial and someone to talk too (like those strangers you call when you have no one left). I feel like Hester would also like a nice Forever 21 app so she can choose some nice outfits to go with the A. She was very different from all other Puritans and being the same would only suffocate her more. She would also have the Herald or the Boston Globe on their too because she can't hear any news of the town since she's pretty much shunned. Lastly, Hester would have to have a lot of music on her phone. Listening to the crickets near the cemetary can drive one insane so a Pandora would be vital to her existance.

Jim Casy, a character from The Grapes of Wrath, would have a Philosophy app, with daily quotations by famous philosophers; this is to help him feed his curiosity. Since he was a pastor, he would get also get a Bible app so he could read up on the ways of Jesus Christ, which would help him in his journey to become a reformer and unifier of the oppressed migrant workers. Jim would need a Facebook app to make more contacts with people who are ready to put an end to the small wages and unfair treatment of the migrant workers and spread the word about future protests.

I would think that Alice from Alice in Wonderland would have the app of Txts From Last Night, the GPS Map, the picture book apps since she wanted to read books with pictures, How to kill a Jabberwocky, How to Crocket, How Deep Does the Rabbit Hole go?, and finally a Substance Reference manual.

My favorite character in a book that I've read this year would probably be Kiowa from The Things They Carried. He wore moccasins in the Vietnam War and one of his favorite weapons was a hatchet. Throughout the book he goes by one name, nobody else does and that certifies his status as a G. Anyway he would probably have Pandora or Grooveshark on his phone so he could play some intense music while hacking away at someone with his hatchet. He also probably would have a Bible app and an app to help him get Vietnam out of his dreams. He'd also have paper toss to kill time.

Gavin said...

One of my favorite characters, Henry Dobbins from The Things They Carried would have several useful apps on his phone. He would more than likely have an instructional app on how to clean an M60; his standard issue weapon. Also, he would have a Vietnamese-English translator so that he could communicate with the Monks who helped him clean his M60. Also, he would have a horoscope app. Dobbins is extremely superstitious, and he would more than likely read his horoscope before going into battle. If he had Pandora Radio on his list of apps he would more than likely listen to all-American music, such as Johnny Cash.

A great character to me was Bill Chalmers from The Diagnosis. The poor guy, I can't even imagine all of a sudden completely blanking out to the point where you end up naked surrounded by police on the T. But anyways, I think a couple of useful apps I know he would have put on his phone include a GPS indefinitely. He'd also consider a personal assistance app, a scheduler, a starbucks finder, a daily business advice app, and possibly AIM to talk with his son. No doubt Chalmers would also have a twitter..remarking after every meeting with a client: "Uhhhh, I thought they would NEVER stop talking..out to avoid people in general today"

Considering Alex stole my character, Edna, I figured I would right about another great role model from the Awakening, Leonce Pontellier.
Considering Leonce is rich and handsome, he would be able to get a Droid with his pocket change. Therefore, he would be able to get as many apps as he wants. The following are the apps he would first download:

Google Health: To find out what is wrong with his wife so he can diagnose her illness.
Skype: So he can talk to his children, because he too never sees them because he is away on business or at the strip club.
Karate: So he can beat up Robert when he finds out he is causing his wife to kill herself.
Dating Hotline: Since he is happily single after his wife died.
Fall Down(game): To play while he waits for his wife to come home from making out with other men.
Facebook: To check his wife's updates about her day at the beach.
Money Counter: To keep track of all the money he gives to Edna to spend on bon bon's for her children.
Camrea: To take pictures of the girls at the "gentlemen's club", because his wife is clearly a hag.
Fashionista: Because he is always worried about what he and his wife looks like, even though it won't do much for Edna.
Sound Soother: To block out the sound of his wife crying at night when he's trying to sleep.
Email: So he can object to Edna moving out a bit faster than writing back, which may or may not be a coinsedence.
Whip: So he can whip Edna into shape.
Yellow Pages: So he can call all of Edna's other boyfriends to ask them if they know where she is hiding the bon bons.

Ron freakin Burgundy. What kind of apps would such a reserved, dignified man of his stature have on his phone?

Nothing but the best.

For his best friend, Baxter, because we know that Ron loves three things in this world, poetry, a good glass of scotch, and Baxter, Ron would have a cheese app to keep track of all the wheels of cheese that Baxter eats. Baxter would also get his own personal Google Maps app so Ron can keep track of him, just in case he ends up in Milwaukee. Baxter would also get a free throw shooting app, because we know how much Baxter loves Wilt Chamberlain.

Ron, for himself, would have a personal grooming app to take care of the bags under his eyes. His suits would make Sinatra look like a hobo, so he needs to stay looking good. Another one would be an all-in-one fitness app since he doesn't have time to go to the gym, so he has to sculpt his guns at the office, and this would really help him get some variety in his workout besides 1000 bicep curls. Another app would be Google Maps as well, because nobody can trust Brick Tamland for directions. Ron would round out his fine telecom device with an app on good food in San Diego because let's face it, milk was a bad choice, and the burritos are too filling.

My favorite character from a book that I have read this year would have to be Pip from the novel "The Great Expectations". I feel as though, throughout Pip's journey to becoming a man, he would need some apps on his brand new Droid x to help him out. First, I feel Pip would enjoy some apps that are mainly games. When Pip, was young, he really did not have that many friends to go play with, so in place of that, Pip could play Angry Birds, Glow Hockey, and Paper Toss. As Pip gets a little older, and finds himself becoming attracted to girls, Pip would have apps like Dating 101, How To Score A Hottie, and other apps that would aid him in the relm of romance. When Pip goes to live on his own in London, and receives a great deal of money from a benefactor, Pip would most likey, or better yet SHOULD, have an app to help him keep track of his banking. He may also have apps that have to do with online shopping. After realizing how naive he has been over the years, Pip would stop using all of the apps he onced used; just like he stopped using his benefactor's money. Pip would now have more common apps like the average Joe, such as facebook, weather app, news app, and other useful apps that one would use in everyday life.

Forgive me if most of these apps don't exist, I don't have a phone with them so I'm just going by what I've heard from others and my imagination.

The character I have chosen is Alex Chalmers from The Diagnosis. As a child of the technological age, with technology-savvy parents, it is inevitable to think he would have many many apps. One of them would be a Chess App so he could practice for his chess meetings. Another would be a Greek Mythology app in order to aid him in his quest to know as much as possible about the subject. A third app could be a Web-MD app so he can try and find a diagnosis for his father's condition. Also, it is obvious that he would have a multitude of messaging apps including an instant messenger or two and an email service so he can keep in touch with his parents without ever having to leave the room. Also, he would likely have a Facebook app so he could check in with everyone. Lastly, Alex would probably have an app or two to aid in web design because he likes to work on the internet, and he most likely would have his own website to update.

One of my favorite characters from any novel I've read is Ponyboy from The Outsiders. On his Droid Ponyboy would have an app for movies such as IMDB, another one to help him find out his IQ, one to help him defend himself, a GPS locater so that he wont get lost anymore, and another app to help him find the cheapest cigarette prices. He may also have an app to help him with his school work.

I am choosing Melissa from The Diagnosis. She's in interesting character that I wanted to wrangle while reading the novel. She is so insecure and self centered that it's truely pathetic. She only wants the cookie cutter life and she expects everyone around her to provide that. She can't do anything for herself besides put on a ton of make-up, get drunk, and have an online affair.

Since she's always changing furniture around her room, she would have a Nate Berkus app because he is a such a handsome man with amazing interior designing tips. By the way Bill hates his room, I'm guessing that she really needs the help.
She would also have an online dating app because telling a computer screen that she loves it is a favorite way to pass time for her.
She definitely has a "how to raise a teenager" app because her poor son Alex is locked up in his room all day moping about his handicapped father.
She has to have a shrink app too. She's just not mentally stable and a little too self absorbed. She wishes she was a California girl with an expensive shrink so this is the best she's going to get.
Heck, she probably has an app with different types of drinks and how to make them right next to how to raise a teenager since she likes to drink when she's stressed. It seems fitting for her.

Even though she's definately not one of my favorite characters I choose Ma from Grapes of Wrath. The first app she would have on her phone is a Price Finder so that she could find the best deals around so she could buy food for her family. She would also have a Hotel Finder so that she and her family would have a nice place to stay where the cops leave them alone. Ma would also have a Monster.com app so she could post her family's resume (not that it would be very impressive) and get notifications for job offers. One of Ma's favorite apps would be a Campfire Bonding app that gives her ideas for family bonding while they're all sitting around the campfire, since one of her biggest fears is that her family is falling apart. Ma would have a Bible app so she can read some scripture for when Casy runs off and isn't there to give his 2 cents as a preacher. Also, it would come in handy to read Bible verses when they need to have yet another funeral. Lastly, Ma would use a Babies 101 app to help Rose of Sharon and give her advice for getting through her first pregnancy and having her first baby, or lack there of.

Since he's fresh in my mind... let's talk Pip.

Even though apps are about 200 years out of his league, I have some ideas for his phone.

Since he's obsessed with fame and money, I could see him having Jeffree Starr's sound board app, just in case he needed to know how 'fabulous' he was. He would also probably like the Bank of America [or rather... Europe] on his phone... just so he can check how rich or poor he was. He might have a Pick Up Line app to practice with for Estella. And finally, I'd assume he'd the Tracker app, so he could see if Orlick was anywhere near him in hopes to not be murdered.

In the Diagnosis, Bill Chalmers would be most in need of apps to help him get through his day. Bill often struggles with memory and other side effects from his disease. Bill would have the car locator app that sets the location of your car when you park it, and give you directions to where you're parked when you're ready to leave. He would also have a memory brain teaser app to help him strengthen his memory. He would also have an app for train schedules, so he would always remember where to get off. Bill would have a web md app to help him diagnosis his disease, since the doctor's efforts were proving ineffective. He would have an organizer app to help him keep on top of all of his clients and meetings, so he would not fall behind on work. Bill would have his work e-mail synced to his phone so he could easily recieve and reply quickly to his e-amils, in order to keep up on them. He would have a drawing app, because towards the end of the novel when he begins to lose his vision, he often likes to draw, and therefore could erase, save and make new drawings easily, since this is one of the few pleasures he had left.

These blog posts are going to be the death of me. Anyways, my character would be Forrest Gump (there is a book version i checked). On his apps would be stocks and bond trader, a shrimp finder, and remote box of chocolate delivery service. He would text Lt. Dan, Jenny, Momma, and Bubba. Also he would have Hamburger Hill for his movie.

One of favorite characters is Hermione, from harry Potter. In "The Deathly Hallows", she is mostly in hiding, so she'll want a ton of apps to pass the time.

-Facebook: She'll want to keep in touch with all of her friends back at school, seeing how much fun they're having

-Twitter: She'll want to Tweet all the time, mostly false info, so no one can find her

-Google Translator: She'll probably find some stuff that she wants to translate while on the run

-Games: There are tons of fun games on the App Store, and she'll want to pass the time

-Google Maps: so she doesn't get lost

-Harry Potter Spells App: she needs to know a ton of spells

-Netflix: She'll want to watch movies, like "How to Train Your Dragon"

I would choose Gatsby from the Great Gatsby because there are many apps about love and there of course is google earth so he could look for Daisy on google earth. This would take forever and I see it as a form of torture he deserves because I hated his character. Such a useless man without the courage to truly go after Daisy.

Rosaleen from "The Secrte Life of Bees" would have an interesting array of apps on her phone. She would have an app about children and how to deal with them, since she raised Lily as she her own daughter. Lily has issues with her father and is confused about her late mother and how she died. Rosaleen would also have an app that tells her that even though she is a sinner, God loves her. She has her own form of religion that she pratices. She stole fans from a church, so this app would ensure her that good people sometimes do bad things. She would have a cookbook app, because she is a good cook. Maybe she would have an app that would allow her to upload some of her own recipes. She would also have an app about different types of chewing tobacco, because that is her one indulgence. She is a unique character, hence the unique apps.

Well...I'm late. I know I am, but I figured I should do this anyways.

I just threw myself under the bus. Ha.
(Why do I do this to myself?)
I'm going to do this one on Bill Chalmers from "The Diagnosis."

Bill would definitely have some kind of app that would allow him to make voice memos. I can see him running onto the train at the T, muttering into his phone about all these ridiculous meetings and things he has to do. Of course he has no time so he'll probably forget to check his memos.

A daily planner app would be great for him though.

I can also see Bill having a FaceBook app. I can see his profile with all these friends, all these false friends that he doesn't even care about. I can see him leaning over his computer, glaring at people's status updates and thinking of things like "What a jerk..." but instead giving "Likes" and comments like "That's awesome, Harvey!"

Maybe some kind of music app? For someone as stressed out as he is, I feel like he would listen to a ton of Classical music. It'd do wonders on him. Or he could just tune into the radio. Is there a station for that?

Yes. Sorry if I accidentally copied someone.

njagelski said...

I think I just threw others under the bus too...
Uh...did I do that?

My favorite character from a book that I have read was Joe Gregary. He was a very simple, kind, and honest man. I do not think that he would have many fancy apps for his phone but probably very essential apps like facebook and the weather channel app. He probably would have a tough time figuring out how to add apps so I do not think that he would have to many apps. He would also most likely have GPS app to find out where Mrs Joe is at all times.
