Post for All...Numero Tres! That's three in Spanish, right?

Good morning..or night....depending on when you read this.

Since we are going to be getting into some AWESOME poetry this year, I feel the need to inspire the masses with song. Don't worry...I will not be breaking out in song (though I did do a mean rendition of the Charleston in the library the other day....you know, the one "made in Carolina"?)  Anyways, songs are poetry set to music, correct?  What better to soothe the savage beast than discussing our favorite songs and how they make us feel.

Sooooo....tell the people your favorite song, the tone it sets, and how/why it sets that tone. Be specific and use backup from the song...you know backup...the stuff needed to prove your points.

That's all, folks!

I'd have to say right now that I have two favorite songs. One being X Gon Give it to Ya by the always peaceful and calming DMX and Mo Money Mo Problems by Biggie, Puff Daddy, and Ma$e. The tone that DMX sets is not one of peace and harmony. He straight up barks like a dog at the beginning. I don't think I can really back up my statement with lyrics (because it's DMX) but it basically pumps me up and makes me feel gangsta whenever I listen to it. Mo Money Mo Problems is secretely a happy song. It's one of the greatest songs ever, even if you don't like hip hop. It's all about making it through hardships. Ma$e says it best when he said "The same old pimp, Ma$e, you know ain't nothin' change but my limp". Meaning that even though he got shot, he's still a pimp.

Ms. Mischley, asking me what my favorite song is like me asking you what your favorite book is... almost impossible. I really love music, of all types and genres, but I actually do have one favorite song.

My favorite song is "Hallelujah", which has been covered by dozens of artists and groups, but my favorite is the Jeff Buckley version. It was originally written by Leonard Cohen. If you've never heard Buckley's version, I suggest you look it up on Youtube (it will be the colossally long 6 minute one).

Anyways, where was I? Oh right, the tone. Hallelujah is a song that is downright beautifully bittersweet. The repetition of "hallelujah..." in between each section of lyrics (or "stanzas") creates an eerie feeling mixed with sadness and lost love. Depending on the reader/listener, the song could have many different interpretations. Basically the overall meaning of the piece is a man singing about a woman, and how she is no longer with him (due to an unknown reason, either a breakup or death can be presumed). He chronicles the relationship in bits and pieces, looking back fondly with little memories of them. The song turns somewhat sensual in pieces, specifically when he sings "but remember when i moved in you/
and the holy dove was moving too/
and every breath we drew was/ hallelujah". The word "hallelujah" seems to take on a different meaning each time it appears, and Buckley's singing only intensifies this meaning. In the previously mentioned stanza, "hallelujah" means the feeling of release and joy that sex brings. Before this stanza, "hallelujah" means sadness and loss when he sings "but love is not a victory march/ it's a cold and it's a broken/ hallelujah". Here, he is lamenting about the end of the relationship and how it has made him feel. This sadness is repeated in the finishing stanza, when Buckley sings "well, maybe there's a god above/ but all i've ever learned from love/ was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you". The tone also has some bitterness at this point in the song, suggesting that he has been wronged by love and this unnamed woman, which makes him question god and love itself. The role of religion is also explored throughout the song, as many Biblical references can be found, such as Samson and Delilah with "she broke your throne/ and she cut your hair". Overall, the song has a tone of the sadness and bitterness of an ended relationship.

Even though it's close to impossible for me to choose a favorite song out of the 7,000 on my computer, I would have to say "All Falls Down" by Kanye West is probably one of the best.

In the song, West talks about materialism, education and having a job. West uses a candid tone about the superficialness of today's society. He talks about how "the prettiest people do the ugliest things for the road to riches and diamond rings," which is true because many people will do whatever it takes to become successful.

West also seems pessimistic because he realizes that people will continue to live like this. He talks about how a girl wants to drop out of college because she doesn't enjoy it, but is scared of what her parents will think of her. This is an example of how many students now may feel. They would rather suffer in order to become more successful in life.

West is also sympathetic. The song talks about how some single mothers struggle to earn money since they are abandoned by their boyfriends. One of my favorite lines is "couldn't afford a car so she named her daughter Alexus." This is an example of the joking and playful tones throughout the song.

Overall, "All Falls Down" uses an number of tones to help expose the superficialness of today's society. West uses humor and life-like examples to do so.

If you are what you say you are...

So, as many have said before me, I have sooo many songs on my computer and it would be difficult to name a favorite. I thought of one that I have yet to hate for the constant replay on the radio. This song is SUPERSTAR by Lupe Fiasco featuring Matthew Santos. The song has much rhythm throughout the lyrics as well as the music composed. For example a major rhyming verse contains

"A fresh cool young Lu'
Tryna catch his microphone check 2, 1, 2
Wanna believe my own hype but it's too untrue
The world brought me to my knees, what have you brung you?
Did you improve on the design? Did you do somethin' new?
Well your name ain't on the guest list, who brung you?"

The song speaks of the life of a superstar including their victories and downfalls that they experience. For example, it asks the intended superstar to approach the microphone and not be afraid. Lupe glorifies the superstar with an exciting upbringing tone. However, in comparison to a poem, the mood plateaus as it explains the moment when "The audience ain't phased
And they ain't gonna clap and they ain't gonna praise". Lupe also describes the hardships with his security guards and feelings away from home. He sort of explains the super star life as a rollercoaster of ups and downs.

The chorus featuring Santos is a slower beat while Lupe's lyrics contain an upbeat catchy rhythm.

If you are what you say you are...

I don't really have favorite songs I just have songs i like to listen to a lot. But right now I really like the song Stuck Like Glue by Sugarland. I like it because it's really catchy. The beat is fast tempo and just gets you in a happy mood. It's a cute love song rather than a deep romantic one. I makes me think of my bf cause he makes me happy nd the song makes me happy! Me and him are always together when we can be and always doing something together. We are pretty much stuck like glue. The first line in the song is "Absolutely no one knows me better" and it is true because he is the only person i have ever told everything too, which is very uncommon for me. This song just is our relationship to a t because it goes through the good times and the bads but it is mostly good. I also really like the song If I die Young by The Band Perry. It's another country song but this one is sad. I like this one because it is meaningful. I liek songs that have substance and aren't just ment to rhyme. Even though this was just a random song they wrote it was still a beautiful song. It talks about if she were to die young she would want her body to be on a bed of roses and buried in satin. She also wants to be made into a rainbow so her mother knows she is safe in heaven with God. But I think the most meaningful line is when she says "funny when your dead how people start listening." Because it is true that people dont really realize what theyv got till its gone and usually its always too late. I like that song because its not one of the normal songs you hear on the radio.

It's difficult to pick a favorite song when there's so many to choose from. Lately though, I have found "Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera to be one of my favorites. Beautiful song really. If you choose to listen it, I would say that you should listen to the Michael Crawford (or John Cudia) version. In comparison, the Gerald Butler (the movie version) is terrible.

As for the background of the song, it's a love song between the characters of the Phantom of the Opera and Christine Daae. For years, the Phantom has been tutoring young Christine in the ways of the voice. She believes him to be the spirit of her father. One night he appears to her from within her mirror, and from there he brings his "Angel of Music" to his underground lair below the opera house.

The song itself is very romantic, although very chilling and for lack of a better word, creepy. The language is very sensational and romantic, as well as dramatic.
Here are the opening lyrics:
"Nightime sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness wakes, and stirs imagination
Silently the senses, abandon their defenses
Helpless to resist the notes I write
For I compose the music of the night"
Very soft sounds are used, for example: "Silently the senses, abandon their defenses." Notice the multitude of the s's. There's also a bit of mystique to this song, seen in: "Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation/Darkness wakes, and stirs imagination."

Obviously, nighttime is cloaked in darkness, we know nothing about it. If the song was about the "Music of the Day," it would be far less effective. He's hidden in the darkness, and because of that we are interested, we are drawn into his world.

"Close your eyes start a journey through a strange, new world/Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before/Close your eyes and let music set you free/Only then can you belong to me."
The feelings evoked in this section are extremely powerful. They convey the passion of the Phantom. He opens up another world to her, asking her to abandon the world she knows then. It's very extreme, and this presents the obsession of his character.

The emotions in the whole song range from sensational ("Touch me/Trust me/Savour each sensation") to brooding and dark ("Turn your face away/From the garish light of day) to obsessive ("You alone can make my song take flight"). They all fuse together to make this very romantic piece that is very chilling, and in a way, scary.

I'd have to say right now my favorite song would have to be Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. I'mm only saying this song because it is the only school appropriate song that is stuck in my head at the moment. This is also a song that is just easy to get into because and let loose because that is what Katy Perry aims for. The chorus of the song is really what gets listeners going
You make me
Feel like
I'm living a Teenage Dream
The way you turn me on
I can't sleep
Let's runaway
And don't ever look back
Don't ever look back

My heart stops
When you look at me
Just one touch
Now baby I believe
This is real
So take a chance
And don't ever look back
Don't ever look back
This is the part of the song when the tone picks up the pace and becomes more up beat. The song speaks about love and feeling the feeling of love, just like teenagers do now, maybe that is why I like it so much.

Right now one of my favorite songs is Frozen by Jared Evans. Jared Evans sets a somewhat neutral tone. The song lyrics however set a tone of sadness. Some of the lyrics are "I had a best friend who's in heaven now, and i just keep on wishing that they let him down."The song also says "She killed her best friend and she cant erase." The whole song is about how he is "Frozen" and how he can't get away from what he needs. Overall its actually a pretty sad song that just doesn't have a very sad beat.

Currently, one of my favorite songs is "Bring the Noise", a collaboration between Anthrax and Public Enemy. Just as the song begins, the drums start everything off. They just start with an unrelenting barrage of double-bass kicks, cymbals, and toms, which could be potentially hazardous to one's hearing. The assault of percussion gives way to Flavor Flav's signature "Yeeeaahhh Boyyyy!", and the song truly begins. The extremely fast rhythm remains constant through a majority of the song. The beat created by the drums and bass are perfect for Chuck D to fire off lyrics extremely fast. Not only do the beat and lyrics fit perfectly, it makes it so the listener cannot sit still, it is just too fast and loud of a song. The lyrics, although not profane, attempt to counterattack the popular media, in typical Public Enemy fashion. They mention that "soul control, beat is the father of your rock 'n roll", as well as that "rap is not afraid of you". The lyrics delivered by Public Enemy and unrelenting attack from Anthrax come together to create a song that can wake even the heaviest sleeper. It is quite possibly the greatest piece of motivational music, as well as one of the best songs to drive to. You just feel completely indestructible and empowered, to say the very least.

Even though it varies everyday, my favorite song at the moment is "Bow Chicka Wow Wow" by Mike Poisner. I really like this song because it has a very upbeat but tranquil tone. The actual word speed is fast, but not like a rap. However the actual music is very slow and relaxing. I also like the lyrics because they are funny and easy to remember because they say words at a certain beat. The repetition of certain words goes along with the beat when he sings "Bow Chicka Wow Wow" because the Wow Wow is repeated. I am not sure how appropriate the lyrics will be for back up but here it goes ...
"Once I throw on this bow chicka wow wow
What you gonna say?
You act like you gon' leave
But I know that you gon' stay
Break it down, dicky down down
Girl, don't even play"

The lyrics have a repetition at a certain point and the same rhyme pattern, like say, stay, play andthen it has gon' to make that word sound shorter to continue to the beat. The repetition of wow wow and down down really is fun to sing and the chrous (shown above) easily gets stuck in your head. I really like this song because it is fun to sing and when you say certain words it just is a fun song to sing. It also pumps you up but at the same time helps you relax.

At the moment my favorite song is Innocent by Taylor Swift. I feel that it sets a tone of relief and happiness because it talks about how you can still be innocent even when you are older. At first the sound is minor so it seems sad, but once you listen to the lyrics you realize that it is actually happy.
"It's all right, just wait and see
Your string of lights is still bright to me
Oh, who you are is not where you've been
You're still an innocent"
These lyrics show that you can still be innocent just by being you and living your life.
"It's okay, life is a tough crowd
32, and still growin' up now
Who you are is not what you did
You're still an innocent"
These lyrics show that eventhough you are older and still growing that you cna still be innocent. It just goes to show that no matter what you do or how older you are you can still be innocent as if you were five years old.

I like all styles of music and this question has me and my musical favorites at an impasse. I like rock, metal, alternative, techno, some forms of rap, jazz, classical, and Japanese pop.
After a couple of days I came to a song and have chosen one of the Japanese Pop genre. Something about the language just draws me in. Their language is so different and difficult to speak. The song itself is Walk On by Orange Range and I suggest you listen to it if you wish to know more about this foreign music genre because trying something new is fun.One lyric in the song "Meippai chikara duyoku arukou Wo" translates to I'm going to boldly walk on, with all my might. The song has this tone of hope or happiness. Almost as if the someone has overcome a great obstacle in life. After finding an English translation I found that this song talks about someone walking on and by doing so becoming less depressed
When translated the chorus says "I wish, lala, that if you smile. For everyone throughout the world to be happy. I wish, lala
Say hello to what's waiting". The song is telling you to say hello to what's waiting meaning that in a sense they want us to not fear the unknown and greet it with enthusiasm. Anyone who thinks of life this way gains by total respect. Also the music when listened makes you feel better even if something bad had just happened like not doing good on that AP Bio exam. In the song they use a guitar, drums, violins, and some others that I could not identify. It also makes you believe that anything can be overcome as long as you keep on trying and never give up which happens to be a common used theme in Japanese literature. Something about this song makes me feel happy and that is just awesome.

Picking one favorite song is practically impossible. Like Amy said asking me what my favorite song is, is like asking you what your favorite book is. There are so many great meaningful songs out there that I love. My favorites keep changing and depend on what mood I'm in, so I can't simply pick one.

But since i have to I guess I would currently have to say King of Anything by Sara Bareilles. it's upbeat and is meaningful. "Who cares if you disagree? You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?" We shouldn't care what other people think of us or our opinions and we shouldn't let other people control what we do and that's the message this song sends. "All my life I’ve tried to make everybody happy
While I just hurt and hide
Waiting for someone to tell me it’s my turn to decide" And we shouldn't have to always put others ahead of ourselves and we shouldn't have to go along with what other people want, we should do our own thing and make our own decisions. It's a good message to send and an upbeat, meaningful song and that's why i like it.

As many of you may know and other that don't, I'm a huge fan of early nineties rap such as Biggie Tupac. Right now my favorite song is "I love the dough" by The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-z, and Angel Winbush from Biggie's album Life After Death. I really like the way the rap all flows together with the beat. It is definitely one of Jay-z's best songs by far. In the early nineties he was in his prime and he slowly lost the hardcore gangster rap vibe. But yet still today he is one of the best.

In the song I don't really relate to the lyrics that much I just love the way it sounds. Quoting Gino it "makes me feel gangsta."

My favorite song of all time has to be I Will Follow You Into the Dark by Deathcab for Cutie. This song achieves a relaxing yet sentimental tone through its emotional lyrics and the totally chill finger picked guitar. The singer talks about the inevitability of him or his significant other dying and how they shouldn't be afraid of it because the other would follow shortly after and they would still be together. This can be easily seen in the first lines of the song, "Love of mine, someday you will die, but I'll be short behind, I'll follow you into the dark." The rest of the song rides on this theme. The music in the background of the song is a single acoustic guitar arpeggiating simple chords with a capo on the fourth fret. This adds to the tranquil melodic nature of the song.

I do not have a favorite song. It changes all the time. I get sick of songs very fast but the one stuck in my head right now is the Bed Intruder Song by Antoine Dodson ft. Kelly Dodson. This song is about a rapist. The lyrics of this song should make you feel angry and disgusted "He’s snatchin your people up Tryna rape em", but the sound of his voice and the actions in the video make it funny. When I hear the song I picture the video. It is a fun song to sing. The word choice is another reason why it is funny instead of a serious matter. He says you need to "hide your kids, hide your wife" hiding people from a rapist does not really work, so the context is funny. He also says "hide your husband". If i were you just look at the meaning of the song it sounds bad to say it is fun and funny but the sound of the voice and the choice of words make it hilarious

I don't really have a favorite song. There are a lot of songs and artists that I like, but I'm not sure that I have a favorite. I like Jimmy Buffet. And a song of his that I like is "Jolly Mon Sing". Mostly, it makes me feel relaxed, even though the song is about pirates killing a guy.

But there is a sense of imagery conveyed, similar to many Jimmy Buffet songs, that you are in the middle of the Caribbean. It reminds me of being on a cruise ship (except without the pirates).

There is also an element of fantasy in the song which adds to the over feeling.

I aswell do not have a favorite song. However the types of songs that I enjoy listening to all the time are the songs that I can relate to. These songs are usually about a girl or boy being heart broken by their lover. Also I enjoy the songs where girls have been hurt but are planing revenge on the guy. Most songs we tend to favor are the songs we can truely connect to on a personal level. This allows the listener to gain a sense of closeness to the artist.

Right now one of my top songs is "Breakdown" by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

The overall mood of this song is pretty chill. It's less than 3 minutes long, so it keeps the song fresh every time you hear it. It doesn't get stale and boring like some other songs. The lyrics are pretty relaxing too, showing no real stress, "it's alright if you love me, it's alright if you don't." Tom Petty was a pretty chill guy and it shows in this song.

But then, like the title of the song, for the chorus, the guitar busts out and breaks it down. A solid riff emerges and just gives the song some much needed tension. Then it all mellows out again until the solo, where everything builds back up.

It's a very balanced song with some basic but interesting aspects, which makes it great for laxin with the bros.

PS Billy Myers' favorite song is secretly "Small Town" by John Mellencamp, no matter what he writes.

I have many favorite songs, but if I had to pick just one, it would have to be Secret Crowds by Angels and Airwaves. I started listening to them about a year ago and I have loved them since. This is my favorite song because I love the intro to it. The drums at the beginning sound very cool and I happen to have played the drums for about 3 or 4 years, so I can appreciate the sound. It also has a catchy sound to it ,too. When I listen to this song, it always relaxes me and gets me thinking. The tone is kind of layed back at the start, but then once the chorus comes in, it seems to pump me up in a way. This is because the tone goes from layed back and smooth, to kind of a heavier rock.

Well right now my absolute favorite song is "The Boys of Fall" by Kenny Chesney. "If I Die Young" by The Band Perry is a close second but by love of football wins this round. Anyway, this song sets reminiscent tone, especially for those of us townies. It takes you back to cool Autumn games sitting on the cold bleachers with his descriptive memories of playing high school football. "When I feel that chill, smell that fresh cut grass, I'm back in my helmet, cleats and shoulder pads", I literally get the chills. These lines, "In little towns like mine that's all they got. Newspaper clippings fill the coffee shops. The old men will always think they know it all. Young girls will dream about the boys of fall" makes me feel the familiar pride of growing up here. Yes it`s a small town and there are downsides, but I love it. I can totally relate to these lines. The music to the song gives off a chilling effect to make you feel as if you are at a game. This is all methodically planned to make you feel this way of course. It sure is a team spirit booster!

Although I have many favorite songs right now I would have to say "Hurt Me Soul" by Lupe Fiasco is my favorite. Hurt Me Soul is a song about all the things that are wrong and corrupt with the rap game. At first he speaks as a child and how he "hated hip-hop".He says that he does not like how rappers glorify drugs, degrade women and have anti-religious views. Then he realizes how much he and many people relate to many rap songs and lyrics. He then takes it a step further saying that many things in America are corrupt even though we live in a free society and he says it "Hurts Me Soul" in the hook. Surprisingly he does this in a very relaxing way despite listing terrible things that happen across the country. The song delivers a powerful message but it is relaxed and not in your face about it.

I just want to say I love this post. I'm completely obsessed with music and almost every paper I wrote last year somehow tied into music or a song. Like everyone else said, there's no way I can have ONE favorite. It really jsut depends on my mood and what I feel like. I can honestly go on for hours about how my music is better than yours because I like what I like. Sorry, I know it's ignorant but I just can't help it! I love music but now onto my post... Right at this very moment, I'd have to say that my favorite song is "God" by Head Automatica. I think it's very relatable because everyone only prays to God when they need something but they never actually believe it on an everyday basis. I still don't know what I believe in and this song represents most teenagers because we're too young to may such a big decision on what we want to believe in and even our place on Earth. I think most people have a hard time believing in something that isnt tangible so it seems unreal. Its also a catchy song but underneath it gets deep. I think most of Head Automatica's songs try to make some sort of statement. And they aren't my favorite band but this is a good song. The last line of the song is very ironic to so I think they were just trying to make a statement to people about their beliefs. "God youve got the strangest sense of humor, youre too funny to be so heavenly"

"I got a question
Let me ask you, can you explain your reasoning to me?
It ain't a matter of my hard luck or bad luck,
When there's no luck in it for me
I'm not the type of man to hold a grudge against,
Something I can hardly see,
But to say that there's a reason for everything,
Makes me doubtful and intrigued to say the least

God you don't want to answer me
But if you do, you'd better agree
God you've got the strangest sense of humor,
You're too funny to be so heavenly

I got you number and you own me
Show me a little common decency"

It’s hard to decide what my all time favorite song is, but I’ve been listening to “First Love’ by Adele a lot. The instrumental sounds like the music played by jewelry boxes or merry go rounds. It creates an innocent feel, like that of a first love. It’s soft, playful and comforting, but when you add the vocals, the tone becomes tired and stressed. At first glance, one may assume that it is a love song to a first love, but it’s actually a break-up song. Adele uses negative words such as “cry, get away, tiring, dried up, hide” to describe her feelings of being in this relationship that refuses to end when it should. However, she juxtaposes her harsh feelings with more positive words that describe her lover: “Please where the face, the one where you smile because you lighten up my heart”. These mixed emotions show a break-up in a different light: it doesn’t have to end badly. Sometimes people grow apart, and Adele exemplifies this message through “First Love”.

I could never truely pick what by is my absolute favorite song in the world is, but I can say that two songs that I belive to be absoltyly awesome and always make me feel great are Time of Your Life by Greenday and The Beast and the Harlot by Avenged Sevenfold. Both songs for me are amazing and keep me going.

Time of your life always helps me remain calm cool and collective. It reminds me of all the good times I’ve had with my friends over the years and how I never wanted those times to end. However I will always have my memories and I will never forget the laughs we shared and the great times we have had.

No matter how lousy of a day I could have, I know that one listen to this song instantly turns me around. I lose complete focus of whatever mad me angry or upset and I just drift off into thought about how my friends have always been there for me, how they always make me laugh when I’m upset and how they always seem to pull me up when I’m down. It’s a very calming and soothing song for me. It helps me let go of all the burdens that I may encounter in life and remember that as long as my friends are by my side those memories will never fade away.

The Beast and the Harlot is a fast passed song that always helps me get revved up and ready to rock. Most of the songs lyrics are plucked straight out of the Book of Revelations. The song has a deep religious backbone and explains how the world no matter how pure it may seem “The Devil” or better yet the presence of evil is always lurking around the corner and it is up to us to look the other way.
The song is all about how the world has been consumed with sin, but the remaining good in the world is worth looking for. The Double base played throughout the song really keeps is going and the absolutely shredding solo by the lead guitarist Synyster Gates never gets old for me. The song really revs me up and gets me going. Its fast passed edgy and all around awesome. It feels like a big game song something you listen to in order to get ready for a huge event that requires you to stay on the edge at all times. Its an amazing metal song with perfect lyrics from The Book of Revalitions that keep it running until the last note.

Nicole Adams...As everyone else is saying its practically impossible to pick one song that i call my favorite. I know most people would think i'm weird for picking this song but i just got home from dance so i'm still in that mode. Whats been stuck in my head lately is Belief by Gavin Degraw. Its a song with just a piano and his vocals that starts out very slow and inspiring and continues to get louder as the lyrics change and the song grows. This song sets a feeling of release . By his lyrics you can tell that he is thanking someone for believing in him.
"Tonight, you arrested my mind.
When you came to my defense.
With a knife in the shape of your mouth,
in the form of your body, with the wrath of a god.
Oh, you stood by me, Belief"
I feel like this was someone very close to him who defended him greatly and he wanted to thank them for everything.

"Do you know where your heart is? Do you think you can find it?"

I had absolutely no problem picking a favorite song which for me is "Say (All I Need)" by OneRepublic.

Just everything about the song can calm me down and make everything alright. This is my go to song when I'm feeling down because there are other things out there besides wallowing in your misery.

"Well bless my soul.
You're a lonely soul
'cause you won't let go
of anything you hold."

Even the simple words and rhymes or slant rhymes creates such a melodic and uplifting mood. The words can speak to anyone and it's so comforting because this song is like a best friend. It's always there to comfort, it always understands, and knows just what to say to make things better.

"Well all I need,
is the air I breathe,
and a place to rest my head."

Honestly, that really is all we need sometimes. People always complain and want so much. Our expectations are so high that we become so easily let down. At least, that's how I feel a lot of the time and this song is very humbling. The questions in the lyrics achieve this effect especially.

"Do you know what your fate is?
And are you trying to shake it?"

One of my favorite songs is probably Give Me a Sign by Breaking Benjamin. The tone is a plea for some sign to lead them to a better place. It vocalized some of the difficult things i was feeling over the course of the past year. The first stanza is

Dead stars shine
Light up the sky
I'm all outta breathe
My walls are closin' in
Days go by
Give me a sign
Come back to the end
The shepherd of the damned

I feel like it encompasses several themes.

I love Rascal Flatts and the song I haven't been able to stop listening to lately is "Bless the Broken Road." The tone that this song sets is a happy, reminiscing tone because the song talks about how through all the paths life has taken them, it led them to the right person in the end. Some of the lyrics are "Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true

That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you" It really sets a peaceful tone as well as the happy and reminiscing tone because of the calm background music.

Honestly, got to school at 11:00 today. Then lunch. Sociology was pissing me off, so I went to the nurse about half way through, layed down on the bed thing, got my ipod, put it on shuffle...
and Bam!
The song was "Does Anybody Out there Even Care?" by Lenny Kravitz

It's one of those songs you listen to when you're reflective and in the mood to just sit, chill, and think. I haven't heard it in a while..

Its tone? the title of the song pretty much covers it. No one seems to care nowadays, unless it's about themselves. We're all full of hatred towards eachother, but who's that helping? We're the ones paying the price for our own hatred and beligerance towards eacother. There's not reason for it. IT's time to turn it around.

The tone is pretty depressing, but inspiring. Starts off slow.. then as it goes on the tempo picks up. And you get more of the "f-you" feel. It's kind of freeing.

My favorite song of all time has to be Soundtrack 2 My Life by Kid Cudi. It details his life and his struggles and it captures the problems that he faced growing up. It details the close relationship that he had with his mother as well. This is something that i can relate with. But it also delves into his inner personal issues that he did not express with others growing up. He makes many references to the face that he is a man on the moon which a reference to how his differnt from people. Also Kid Cudi's lyrics and rhytem are superb. The beat to the song is also perfect for his style of rap and it really flows well.

Ok well Chris Brown is my absolute favorite so I'm obviously going to pick one of his songs. I love all his songs but one is With You. This song is very sentimental because it's about how much he loves his girl and how much he loves being with her (hence "With You") and there's no one else in the world that he loves as much as her. Some lyrics of the song that set this tone are:
You're my sweetheart
And I'm so glad that you're mine
You are one of a kind

If I got you I don't need money, I don't need cars

You're the best part of my day

With every kiss and every hug, you make me fall in love

That's not really in order and just reading the lyrics makes it sound really cheesy but it is a good song I swear...These "cutesy" lyrics help set the tone of a sentimental, admiring poem and it's basically differnent ways of saying how much he appreciates the love of his life.

I don't know why picking a song is practically impossible for everyone- I've had the same favorite song since I heard it when I was really young.."Human Nature" by Michael Jackson. The horns in the song are absolutely beautiful- the arrangement is genius. Even if you don't like that style of music you can't deny it's brilliance in it's own right.

The song's tone is soothing and very relaxing. If I've had a long day that song will put me into a REM cycle before it's played halfway through..actually the entire Thriller album never gets old for me. But back to the tone- it subtly builds by adding layers upon layers of instruments, posing a crescendo of soprano three quarters of the way through, almost acting as a rhetorical shift in the tone. Here are some lyrics:

Looking out across the night-time
The city winks a sleepless eye
Hear her voice shake my window
Sweet seducing sighs

Get me out into the night-time
Four walls won't hold me tonight
If this town is just an apple
Then let me take a bite

Just so you are aware, it's 530am and I've been trying to pick a song since midnight...

I am very fickle with music. I like tons of songs, but I rarely ever declare one to be my favorite, but because you've made us pick, I went through my entire musical collection and have come up with a winner.

'Graves' by Tokyo Police Club is my favorite song. The name sounds dark, but its essentially an alternative pop/punk song. The band is from the UK so when I use my backup, take into account that their phrases can be... different.

The tone it sets is one of pure happiness. The beat is upbeat, the tempo is fast, the guitars aren't too heavy, and they use a synth to keep the music upbeat, but heavier than your traditional pop song.

'Graves' described lyrically and figuratively are polar opposites. Keep in mind this is not a love song, but a song about love [that'll make sense as you read on].

Lyrically, the song tells of two lovers who bury themselves alive next to the grave of the girl's dead mother.

Obviously, that has some deeper meaning.

The lines "Meet me where your mother lies/ We'll dig graves on both her sides/And lay ourselves inside/ A thousand suns will set and rise" are a good example.

The song is not about killing yourself. It is [to me at least] about the wish that many young couples have; to be together forever.

Though the lead singer uses death as the example, he really means what death brings, rather than dying itself.

The couple wants to be able to spend eternity together completely undisturbed, so they use death or rather, afterlife as a metaphor to achieve an undisturbed and carefree eternity.

At the same time, they realize that it is impossible for them to be together forever unchanged. In the last lines "'Cause your trading me for the lump sum/Try but I'll never be a gentleman/Trading me for the lump sum/Try but you only ever treat the symptom" the boy is trying to tell the girl that things will change and it won't always be as perfect as it is right then. The girl if fighting back by living in the present and only focussing on how good things are now, rather than what may or may not happen in times to come. [Excellent advice]

Essentially, this song is one of the one I listen to when I'm tired of grindcore [LOL], It's almost on a par with being a driving song, but I've seen them play it live and acoustic and they easily can change the tempo and instrumentation to make it mean something totally different.

So uhm yea, show the person you love how much you care about them by digging your grave next to their dead family member's and burying yourself alive. It worked for at least ONE british guy.

SURPRISE!!! Corey picked a showtune! My ultimate theme song is “Defying Gravity” from Wicked the musical. This song means the world to me, not just because I relate to the character who sings in, Elphaba, but because its message is so poigiant. She sings : “Something has changed within me/ Something is not the same/ I'm through with playing by the rules/ of someone else's game”. This is her relization, she is fed up and angry. “Too late for second-guessing/ Too late to go back to sleep/ It's time to trust my instincts/ Close my eyes and leap!” She convides that she can not turn back and its time for her to “try Defying gravity / And you can't pull me down!” She has broken her friendship with Glinda, due to Glinda’s unwillingness to give up her change at money, power, and fame; so she says with triumph “So if you care to find me/ Look to the western sky! As someone told me lately: "Ev'ryone deserves the chance to fly!"” This quote was said by the Wizard earlier and Elphaba takes it literally and defys gravity with an enchanted broom. “She end the song staing that she doesn’t care if shes “flying solo/ At least I'm flying free/ To those who'd ground me/Take a message back from me /Tell them how I am /Defying gravity” finishing with the statement, “And nobody in all of Oz/ No Wizard that there is or was /Is ever gonna bring me down!”. The song as a whole starts off very sweet and almost lullaby-like and they huddle in the attic of the Emerald City Palace. When Elphie gives up on Glinda and is attacked by the Guards the music escalates in speed and volume, leveling out as Elphaba is in the sky. In an analitical sense, the song also represents “Defying Gravity” as not going with the norm, bracking free from opressive forces or ideals which you disagree with.

I don't neccesarily have a favorite song, but one song that i really love is Love You More by Eminem. The song is about Kim and his life together, and how hard it is for them to love each other but no matter what they can't stop. It talks about all of the struggles they go through as a couple, and about how they stay together for Haley, but really they'e together because they love each other no matter what. The song leaves me feeling sad and hurt because not only is it a sad song, but I personally can relate to the lyrics. Obviously I don't have a child, but the part about the struggles of love is something that really relates to my own story. It's hard to listen to this song sometimes because it is such an emotional song, but that's part of what makes it such a good song. The songs that leave you thinking and emotional are some of the best ones out there.

Well, I don't think there's such thing as a favorite song, given the struggle basically everyone else here faced in choosing their's..but one song that I really love right now is "Mine" by Taylor Swift. Not to be cliche, but I just feel as though Taylor Swift's songs are consistantly good, they will always put you in a good mood, and the lyrics directly realte to what's going through any teenage girl's head.
This song depicts the life of a couple from the moment that they meet, to them falling in love, to struggles that they face in their relationship, and finally to a happy ending. The tone of the song is sweet, light and happy, using imagry such as "you put your arm around me for the first time", going along with Taylor Swift's very fairytale like theme in some of her recent songs. The memories that she recalls as though telling the story in past tense give the song a reminicent tone. It seems to tell a story, reaching the climax when she says "And I remember that fight 2:30 AM, You said everything was slipping right out of our hands", giving a tense, despairing tone, and then finally ending with a sigh of relief and happiness when she says "Then, you took me by surpriseYou said, "I'll never leave you alone."

Matt C says....

"As much as this may seem like an easy topic, it is far from it. Along with most of the people on here, it is extremly hard to choose a "favorite song". Seeing as I must choose a song, I I can choose "your're not along" by Saosin. This song starts out slow but by the chorus, it picks up. The song is about someone who is feeling down and alone and they feel like they are the only one that feels this way. The artist, though, informs the sad person not worry because there are so many people that feel the same way as they do.

Right now, my favorite song is Dynamite by Taio Cruz because it always puts me in a good mood. It makes me wants to have and just enjoy life. This song has a carefree and fun mood because of its upbeat music and lyrics. One of the lyrics in the song is “I want to celebrate and live my life”, which sets the mood for the entire song. Overall, it is about having a good time and not worrying about anything. The song itself makes you want to just let everything go and just enjoy what is going on in the present.

Right now my favorite song is The Catalyst by Linkin Park which sets an empowering tone. The song begins with the lines "God bless us everyone" and continues with "The sins of our fathers/the sins of our young" that causes a strong emotional reaction because it is shouted with sounds of electronica and rock in the background. The song is more of a song to dance to, but the lyrics seem to indicate the influence that society has on us. Like memories in cold decay/ Transmissions echoing away". The tone is empowering because the song brings awareness of the chaos of the state the world is in, with growing wars and conflicts. "We're a broken people living under loaded gun".

(this is my third attempt to post this because of a horrible computer virus called Security Tool, if anyone has any knowledge about how to get rid of it please let me know)
